The Finals Experience
If it sounds exciting to collaborate with like-minded peers around the world and discover completely new ways to apply mathematics through problems above your usual level, then the Finals are for you!
The WMC Finals are a weeklong residential experience at a prestigious university. Every day is packed with mathematics, with a healthy mix of seriousness and laughter, geekiness and play, indoors and out! One day you’ll analyse real-world data; another day you’ll go on an excursion; and yet another day you’ll design your own probability game!
Finals Rounds
The Finals include a total of 15 rounds, only 5 of which are the same as in Qualifiers (Classic, Crypto, Cycle Solve, Duel, Lightning) — the remaining 10 are entirely new! Finals rounds are designed to encourage a balance of lateral thinking, teamwork, and learning new concepts.
Arrival & Initial Bonding
Experience authentic university campus life at Imperial College London (Senior level) or University of Melbourne (Junior level).
Day 1 is all about settling in and meeting fellow finalists from different schools and countries around the world. In the afternoon, you’ll connect with your diversified Pure Rigour teammates and randomised Applications teammates for the first time - and realise how quickly strangers become a close-knit community that support and inspire one another throughout the competition!
Mentor Time
Throughout the week, every Finalist is placed into a mentor group led by dedicated mentors. Every evening, Mentor Time gives you a chance to relax, get to know everyone better, ask questions, and chat about the day's activities. Your mentor group is your support network throughout, and for many, it's where some of the best friendships are made!
Excursions
To balance out the intense problem-solving, we head off campus in small groups for excursions around the host city. We go sightseeing, explore local attractions and/or catch a musical, often involving mathematics because, after all, maths is everywhere!
Celebration Banquet
On the final night, it's time to celebrate! We dress up into formal attire for the Celebration Banquet, where everyone comes together for the awards ceremony and a feast of local delicacies. Together, we reflect upon and celebrate everything we have achieved across the week. Every one of us, including staff, will have grown and developed new skills within this time, so we all deserve to party!
What Comes Next?
Oxbridge Senior Camp
Make the most of this journey by extending the networking, fun, challenge and growth for another week.
With an even closer mentor staff to student ratio, this is the best way to experience first hand what it feels like to actually do mathematical research and communication! These extra 7 days are packed with tutorial sessions discussing and analysing problems from the previous week.
We will also engage in excursions to Cambridge, Oxford and University College London, as well as spend the final few nights staying and celebrating in Royal Holloway University, London.
The week concludes with an exhibition of self-crafted problems, including a mathematical Essay making a deep dive analysis of 1 significant mathematical problem.
