We are a team of experienced, passionate and dedicated educators and alumni who believe learning and assessment should be fun, relevant and challenging.
Our Mission
…is to facilitate deep creative learning in young people through collaborative and fun mathematical competitions. We believe that assessment can be made more holistic and applicable through lower-stakes experiences that take both soft and hard skills into account. Our approach mixes innovative rounds, ranging from maths duels to cryptography, to provide an alternative to traditional tests, focusing on inclusivity and curiosity rather than speed or rote memorisation.
Through our global events, the WMC aims to foster a community that connects students, alumni and teachers who love solving problems, thinking outside the box, and geeking out about our favourite theorems.
Our History
WMC originally started out as the South East Asian Mathematics Competition (SEAMC), founded in March 2001 by Steve Warry, an enthusiastic teacher at the Alice Smith School, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He believed that Mathematics could be a ‘spectator sport’. Tragically, he passed away a week prior to the event, but colleagues still made it happen and Steve’s dream became a reality.
Due to increasing demand, in February 2014 a parallel North version of the competition (NEAMC) was hosted by Malcolm Coad in the Nanjing International School, China.
By 2017, further expansion was needed and we became the World Mathematics Championships, with the inaugural WMC Finals being successfully held in June 2018 at Trinity College in the University of Melbourne.
WMC continues to expand around the world, bringing Steve Warry’s vision to more young people globally.
Meet The Mentors
The WMC exists thanks to a tight community of passionate teachers and WMC alumni around the world. With over 30 active alumni, the WMC values letting talented participants take initiative and craft the next WMC experience themselves.
The majority of present-day WMC staff are former participants wanting to share their passion for mathematics by writing questions, adjudicating events, and designing new rounds.
